
The project involves a multinational collaboration among research centres, industrial operators and technology provider from different EU Member States. All the partners have a proved expertise in their field of activity and the partnership is ideally balanced to achieve the transfer activities from R&D to pilot and then to full industrial scale. The partnership includes RTOs, Technology providers and Steel Producers. More in details, as summarized in the picture, TENOVA will work on the multifuel burner development, realization of DEMO case 1, with RES installation (realized with own resources), electrolyser installation and industrial burner testing; modelling supported by CFD analysis; TATA and Nunki will realize the Demo case 2, to study at TRL 7 the limit of current combustion system used with blends of H2/NG and also will collect samples to carry out TGA; Nunki will work on the DEMO case 3 to study the effects of hybrid heating gas on ladle refractory preheating.
In addition to this three democases, the quality assessment will be carried out by different partners following their expertise:
RINA-CSM will check the quality of samples with thermogravimetric tests and furnaces able to work in different thermal conditions and oxidising atmosphere SWERIM will perform pilot plant trials with hydrogen combustion and the effect on hydraulic descaling for the final surface quality and steel losses due to scaling rates. Semi-industrial scale 500kW chamber furnace and descaling unit will be completely dedicated to this project for 21 months which includes alterations, installations, safety followed by testing and work related to finishing the activities and delivering test samples to the steel industry; in synergy with SWERIM pilot plant trials, SSAB will provide reference conditions for the reheating and descaling trials at SWERIM together will specimens of selected steel alloys of industrial importance and LINDE will provide expertise in the industrial supply and use of hydrogen and experience using oxyfuel technology. Moreover, AMMR will test steel samples from as-cast steels (slabs, thin slabs) and plates for the measurements of the oxidation kinetic. Industrial samples will be heated in a furnace designed to reproduce the industrial heating curves of ArcelorMittal reheating furnaces and product oxidation and will be descaled with a descaling unit. SNAM and IDN will provide all the competencies for hydrogen management: electrolyser installation and will be strongly involved in the specification of electrolyser unit and installation at Tenova premises (trials at TRL 7).
